Restore Net Neutrality, or we'll all pay

I received a request from an individual whom I know and trust in real life to post this link on my blog, and it seemed like a good idea:  A petition to the Obama administration to restore Net Neutrality by directing the FCC to classify Internet Providers as "Common Carriers." As the law stands now, ISPs could be permitted to charge companies for access to their users and charge users for access to certain services, resulting in fewer companies being able to afford access for innovative ideas and products.  The Internet as a channel for free speech would probably also suffer.

As it stands now ISPs can do a simple word search of any page a user tries to load and prevent any website with the words "net neutrality" from loading for their subscribers and it's completely legal.

They can also legally decline to deliver e-mails to congress people urging action on this issue, block the registration of votes on online petitions, prevent people from logging into websites and forums expressing opposing positions by preventing the transmission of usernames and passwords, and block mobile devices from connecting to their networks if they feel like you are using them to campaign against them. They could also be selectively redirecting accounts of policymakers to older versions of sites so they don't see posts about this topic.

So far they haven't done any of this. That we know of. Since they own the news, both print and televised, as well, they could already be doing this and suppressing all attempts by people to tell anyone.

The internet side of this is completely legal. The TV and print side is not, but if no one who is raising a clamor can be heard, there is no way to bring charges.

Scary stuff. I've already signed the petition.
